Norwalk Seaport Association Receives Westport Patagonia Enviro Grant

Susan Snider (center), executive director of the Norwalk Seaport Association, accepted a Patagonia Enviro Grant check for $1,500 from Patagonia associate Judy Kellhoffer (right) on Saturday, April 19 at the Westport store, where the Seaport Association presented information about its habitat restoration project on Sheffield Island and its educational and lighthouse activities. There also was an opportunity to sign up for a drawing for two Patagonia Jetstream Jackets.

Summer Programs at Sheffield Island

Choose to attend a day, all week or several days! Children will escape on a nautical journey to Sheffield Island for a day filled with adventure and discovery with the Norwalk Seaport Association education team.

More than 200 guests attended the 2008 Norwalk Seaport Association Light Keeper's Gala, which raised $60,000 for the Seaport Association’s stewardship of historic Sheffield Island Lighthouse. In addition, attendees donated $9,000 to underwrite scholarships that will allow children in need to participate in the Seaport Association’s Sheffield Island Adventure Program during August. State of Connecticut Safe Boating Course

The Norwalk Seaport Association is offering this four-session course from 7:00-9:30 p.m. in its 4th floor classroom at 132 Water Street in Norwalk. The course is free for Norwalk Seaport Association members and $20.00 for nonmembers. Participation will be limited to 35 students. Participants who attend all four sessions and successfully complete the final exam will be eligible to apply for a State of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate or Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation.

Norwalk Seaport Association
Operating since 1979, the Norwalk Seaport Association is a non-profit environmental, preservation and maritime educational organization offering a wide array of special events and community projects. The Seaport Association has owned and maintained Sheffield Island Lighthouse since 1986. The NSA ferryboat, G.W. Tyler, conveys visitors to Sheffield Island for tours of the 140-year-old historic lighthouse, special events and enjoyment of a walking trail through the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge. The organization’s best-known event is the annual NSA Oyster Festival, now in its 30th year, which attracts 80,000 people over three days in early September and also provides $240,000 in fund-raising opportunities for more than 20 other local non-profit organizations.
